HOLY TRINITY

TRINITY SUNDAY – June 2025, Year C

Our faith is based on Divine Revelation. God reveals Himself to humankind. If God hasn’t and doesn’t reveal Himself then we have only human ideas of God. Humans don’t always have an accurate grasp of who humans are, and what human nature is, even with a lot of data available, much less an unaided understanding of who God is and divine nature. If human nature is not fully revealed to us, and we are continually growing in understanding even of our own persons, how could we know God with any degree of certainty without Divine Revelation?

Everyone has experiences of being related to, not according to the way we are, but according to the way others think we are. And we can presume we relate to others at times according to the way we think they are, rather than the way they actually are. This happens when we have received no revelation from them, have inaccurate or incomplete information, or have made a superficial observation and misinterpretation. It’s much better to be related to the way we are and to relate to people the way they are rather than some imaginary idea.

God has considerable experience with being related to, not according to divine nature, but as people conceive Him to be. Even when people consider the revelation of God, mistakes can still be made. With the many mistakes made in human judgment of people, even with much revelatory data, that is not too surprising. If we need to study people, human nature and human revelation constantly, even more so do we need to study divine nature and Divine Revelation if we want to relate and respond to God as He is and has revealed Himself to be, rather than how we think He should be or is.

The Feast of the Blessed Trinity centers on God’s revelation of His inner life. As we accept the revelation of people, when they tell us what they are like, even though we might not always understand them, so we accept the revelation of God’s Word on the mystery of God’s inner life. We believe in the Trinity, that is, that there is one God who is made up of three Divine Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

We ourselves are Trinitarian. We are a body, mind and soul (or spirit). We know ourselves to be one and yet three. We are made in God’s image. This truth of our nature’s oneness is important because whatever happens to one part of our person affects the others to which it is united. The spiritual state of our soul affects the mind and the body. The mental state of our mind affects the soul and the body. The physical state of our body affects our soul and mind. We do best to accept the mystery of Threeness in one in God’s revelation of Himself and in our own nature too. The truth of the Trinity comes from Divine Revelation and is central to our faith in God and Jesus Christ, who revealed the Father, Himself to be His Eternal Son, and the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit.

Direct Divine Revelation of God began with the chosen Hebrew people. They came to know God through His great saving actions as Moses recalled of “signs and wonders”. Divine Revelation reached a high point when God became man in Jesus, called humans into God’s life, and revealed and promised the Holy Spirit. “All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

The Spirit helps us understand the mystery of God’s revelation. “The Spirit Himself gives witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” Jesus lived the mystery of the Trinity. He was aware of being in union with the Father and the Holy Spirit. He calls all to live the mystery of the Trinity, and commissioned the Church.

“Full authority has been given to me…in heaven and on earth; go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

            Praise the Triune God!

Reflection from Divine Mercy #409

“Oh if only all souls knew Who is living in our churches, there would not be so many outrages and so much disrespect in these holy places!”
